There is no universal timeline

Duration depends on goal difficulty, starting point, and consistency. What research does establish is that goals should be specific and time-bound to function at all [1].

Set a horizon you can actually see

Twelve-month goals are common but hard to feel. Pair each long goal with a 90-day milestone that is concrete enough to plan against.

Progress depends on initiation, not intensity

The main failure point is not effort but starting. If-then plans directly address initiation and produce a medium-to-large effect on attainment [2].

Expect and plan for the stall

Most goals fail at a predictable point. Naming that point in advance is mental contrasting; planning the response is an implementation intention [3][4].

Review quarterly, adjust honestly

Mental contrasting also supports clean disengagement from goals that are genuinely infeasible [3]. Letting go of the wrong goal is a legitimate outcome, not a failure.
