What goals do to motivation

Goals mobilise effort and increase persistence, and they do so more strongly when specific and challenging [1]. A visible board keeps that machinery engaged rather than letting goals fade from attention.

Where imagery helps

Imagery interventions in sport produced a medium effect not only on performance but on motivational outcomes [5]. Rehearsing the doing appears to support the willingness to do.

Where boards can sap motivation

Dwelling on the outcome as though attained reduced achievement in Oettingen's studies [3]. Motivation is spent, not stored, by fantasy.

Designing for sustained motivation

Show effort as well as reward, contrast against obstacles, keep an if-then plan visible [2][4], and review weekly with one accountable person [6].
