What Is a Future Self Vision Board?

How future-self framing works, what the evidence supports, and how to build a future-self board that changes behaviour.

The idea

A future-self board represents the person you intend to become rather than the objects you intend to acquire — habits, standards, and roles instead of possessions.

Why the framing is useful

It shifts the board from outcomes to behaviours. That matters because imagery evidence concerns rehearsing actions [4][5], and because outcome-only fantasy is associated with lower attainment [3].

Building one

Describe the future self in behavioural terms: what they do weekly, what standards they hold, what they decline. Then attach specific goals [1] and if-then plans [2] that a person with those standards would follow.

The honest caveat

Identity language is motivating but not sufficient on its own. Pair ‘I am someone who trains’ with ‘if it is Tuesday at 7am, then I run the river loop.’
