Does Visualization Actually Improve Performance?

What the sport and motor-imagery literature shows about visualisation — where it demonstrably helps, and where the evidence does not extend.

Where the evidence is genuinely strong: skill rehearsal

A meta-analysis of imagery interventions in sport found a medium overall effect on performance and motivational outcomes [2]. A separate systematic review and meta-analysis in tennis found motor-imagery training improved service performance [4].

Mechanistically, motor imagery activates representations overlapping those used in execution, which is why rehearsal transfers [3].

Where the evidence does not extend

These findings concern rehearsing specific physical actions. They are frequently over-generalised into claims that imagining any desired outcome causes it to occur. That extrapolation is not supported — and in the goal-pursuit literature, outcome fantasising predicted worse results [1].

The practical translation for vision boards

Visualise the doing, not just the having. A board depicting you at the desk, on the route, in the room mid-effort is closer to the evidence than a board depicting the trophy.
